Physical Therapy Treatment for
Pre-Natal Care
Pre-natal care in physical therapy can include
bracing the sacro-iliac joint which can create
significant pain during pregnancy, instruction
in posture which is constantly changing during
the 9 months gestation, and instruction on
safe exercise during pregnancy that can help
prepare the body for labor and delivery as
well as assist in a speedier recovery and restoration
of body tone following delivery.
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is defined as loss of bladder
control. Generally, weakness of the pelvic
floor muscles occurs after pregnancy, vaginal
delivery and during and following menopause
when estrogen levels decrease naturally. Other
factors may increase the likelihood of developing
some form of incontinence or increase its
severity such as high impact physical activities,
prolonged immobility, too little fluid intake,
constipation, certain medications and smoking.
Education is a major component of this program.
Information is provided concerning
common misconceptions of fluid type and
intake, normal bladder frequency and volumes,
and behavioral techniques to improve continence.
Biofeedback may be used to enhance
patients’ awareness of the pelvic floor muscles
thus allowing better strengthening of the
muscles and decreasing input from abdominal
muscles that are counter-productive.
Physical Therapy Treatment for
Postpartum Pain and Dysfunction
Postpartum Pain and Dysfunction may present
as episiotomy scar pain, Caesarian scar and
abdominal pain, diastasis recti (separation of
the abdominal rectus muscles), epidural site
pain, pubis diastasis (separation of the anterior
portion of the pelvis), and any of the incontinence
issues that occur following delivery.
Physical Therapy uses methods such as ultrasound
and electrical stimulation, massage/
manual therapy which can address pain and
discomfort. Therapeutic exercise is used to
address decreased flexibility, muscle weakness
and imbalances, postural issues, body mechanics
with child care activities and restoration
of recreational/athletic function.
